The Science behind Pine Bark Extract
Pine extract contains a complex combination of biologically active substances that belong to the group of bioflavonoids. Over 4,000 representatives with well-expressed antioxidant properties have been identified from this group. The chemical composition of Pycnogenol is well understood.
It includes: 80-85% proanthocyanidins, 5% of the monomers catechin and taxifolin, and the residue are partitioned between some phenolic acids (ferulic and caffeic) and water.

Five large clinical trials with more than a thousand diabetic patients using pycnogenol have led to marked improvements in visual acuity.
Scientists confirm that the proanthocyanidin complex helps to seal the cracked capillaries in the eyes. This impedes the development of vision loss in patients suffering from diabetic retinopathy.
Improves concentration time
A study conducted over a decade ago found that pine bark extract had a positive effect on children with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).
Sixty-one children took either 1mg per kilogram per day of Pycnogenol or placebo for four weeks. The Pycnogenol group showed significant improvements in attention, concentration, and visual-motor coordination.
Improves immune coordination
Studies show that pycnogenol supplements improve symptoms of allergic rhinitis. People who experience this usually have a large increase in immunoglobulin E (IgE) when exposed to birch pollen.
Pycnogenol supplementation significantly reduced immunoglobulin E levels, showing less allergic reactions to birch pollen compared to a group of people who took placebo supplementation.
Reduces cholesterol, controls blood sugar and maintains arterial health
Researchers found that pine bark extract improves the flexibility of blood vessel walls while clearing the plaque. This was found during a study that gave a 150 mg daily dose of pine bark extract to a group of 93 patients with disorders of the blood or arteries.
The results were incredible. Two months later, patients who suffered from high blood pressure, high blood cholesterol, or blood sugar problems had an average 54 percent increase in blood flow. After three months, average blood flow was increased by more than 66 percent.
Pine Bark Extract seems to reduce oxidative stress that usually leads to blood and circulatory disorders. Simply said, it cleans your body from all the negative clogs that form up with time.
Pycnogenol has also shown to be useful for patients with asthma.
According to several studies, a dose between 100 and 200mg of pine bark extract daily will sufficiently decrease the symptoms of the disease.

The results from studies have been extremely positive. According to a study, regular intake of pycnogenol helped over 90% of the men who participated to have a normal erection.
Side Effects and Dosages
Pine Bark extract showed no side effects in the doses tested up to 300 mg daily for 3 months. The safety with higher doses is not yet confirmed.
The exact dosage varies between studies, but the optimal dosage is in the range of 100 to 200 mg per day. The daily dose can be divided into several doses during the day or taken at one time.
Eating while eating is recommended but not mandatory.
For children, pine bark extract is not recommended for long-term usage.
People who will go under surgery should stop using pycnogenol at least 2 weeks prior. Otherwise, it may lead to slower blood clothing.
People with bleeding conditions should also reconsider and avoid taking pine bark extract. It could increase the risk of bleeding.
It has not yet been confirmed whether pine bark extract is safe for pregnant women. To be safe, reconsider using it during that period or at least get a professional opinion on the subject.
Also, there is not enough scientific support to confirm whether it is also safe for the breastfeeding period. As we know, it is not considered safe for children in the long-term run. Therefore, you should stay away from it for some time. Side effects have not yet been found but the apparent benefits are not worth the risk.
